In early February the Ministry for Culture and Heritage released a Media Reform consultation document that includes five draft proposals to modernise the country’s media legislation, among which is a streamlining of Crown screen content funders which would see NZ On Air and the NZ Film Commission consolidated into a single organisation.
Currently public funding for television and film content is primarily administered by NZ On Air, the Film Commission and Te Māngai Pāho.The proposal is to establish a content funding entity that consolidates the Film Commission and NZ On Air with the goal of more efficient administration of government funding for local content and industry development. Along with explaining the risks and options the consultation document invites industry responses to several related questions with a submission deadline of Sunday March 23.
