SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music has announced three finalists for the 2022 SOUNZ Contemporary Award | Te Tohu Auaha, celebrating excellence in contemporary composition.

The winner will be announced at the 2022 APRA Silver Scroll Awards to be held in Auckland on 18 October.

The finalists were selected by a judging panel of independent industry representatives including an international representative Peter Veale plus Ashley Brown, Justine Cormack, Mark Menzies and Sonya Waters, who commented on the very high quality of the submissions demonstrated in the 54 works entered by 46 composers.

They are:

  • Neville Hall for more full of flames and voices, a trio for clarinet, accordion and cello.
  • Reuben Jelleyman for Catalogue, written for an ensemble to complete his masters at the Paris Conservatory.
  • Philip Brownlee and Ariana Tikao for Manaaki, for taonga pūoro and string quartet.
