Moolburn: Cheap Sounds For All

This one’s a bit of a renegade, Moolburn, an electronic artist from Dunedin. It’s safe to say that fans of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher are probably the only ones who will find their way around this album easily.

It’s a totally mixed bag of electronic experimentalism, some of it annoying as hell, other parts really intriguing. It’s all instrumental, occasionally danceable, but perhaps more mind music.

With different moods/textures/paces, quite often in the same track, a lot of it will seem random to many. This is classic experimentalism and is therefore timeless, in a ‘90s-till-now kind of bent. And bent would be a good adjective. Oh go on, let’s add Boards Of Canada to the mix.

It’s a little bit anonymous as there’s no evidence of who Moolburn is, but it doesn’t really matter.

This is bedroom shenanigans from someone who’s done their homework and unleashed their creative spirit, and while maybe not to be taken after a hard night on the tiles, I suspect will be great when ingested at just the right moment.
