NewTracks New Artist: Jackson Owens

NewTracks New Artist: Jackson Owens

Given the size of it, one can safely assume that not many people from Turangi have made their way to LA in search of musical opportunities. 20-year-old singer Jackson Owens made the leap across the Pacific when he was just 16 to join US boyband Far Young. Fans stayed loyal after the band broke up – all up he’s currently got around 74k followers on Facebook alone, which is remarkable considering that aside from many covers he showcases, he has so far only released one solo single. That debut track, Touch, featured on NZ On Air’s NewTracks compilation this July.

What’s your musical background Jackson?

I have been singing from a young age, about 10 years old. My family is very musical so music had a huge influence on me growing up. My koro (grandfather) always listening to the old school; Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder. My voice is probably my instrument, but I play around with the guitar every now and then.

What makes Touch stand out for you as a single?

Well, Touch is a big deal for me personally, It’s my first solo release. It’s the start to the artist I want to become. I have the release of the video for Touch coming soon and maybe two to three follow-up singles. I am very excited about what’s to come, I have some exciting opportunities coming up in the near future.

What is the story behind Touch?

Touch is a song about a relationship you’ve had – where you find yourself missing and longing for that emotional and physical presence / connection that you once shared – but didn’t realise what you had until it’s gone.

What’s your favourite moment, musical or lyrical, of the single?

Although Touch is significant in that it’s my debut single, my favourite part would probably be filming the video in New York. It was an awesome experience to have such a creative and talented team producing and directing it. One of the things I most like about the music industry is that you meet so many talented people and make many valuable relationships personally as well as professionally. It makes for a very enjoyable and exciting journey!

Who did you write/record/produce the single with?

I worked with a very talented guy, Alex Wildwood, we both had a lot of fun making Touch!

Describe in one sentence what you want listeners to take away from this song.

‘That our fingerprints don’t fade from the lives we touch.’

In general, how do you work out what song would make a good single?

Honestly, just whatever I think sounds the best to me. I felt like Touch was the best track to start off with!

How can we find you on social media?

My username for these is ‘jacksonowensnz’  – you’ll be able to find me on Facebook, Instagram Twitter and Snapchat.

Any last words?

I am very grateful and thankful for the journey I’m on. Don’t give up on your dreams, work hard and appreciate those around you!
