Hamo Dell: Going Solo And Having A Little Fun

Hamo Dell: Going Solo And Having A Little Fun

Born in Invercargill, singers’ singer Hamokiterangi Dell (Ngāti Porou) practised kapa haka and chapel singing throughout her childhood, following that by graduating with a music degree from SIT. Following a few years as the lead female voice in Tomorrow People, Hamo Dell is now a few high-profile collaborations into a solo career. Recently released single Little Fun with local stalwart Sammy Johnson is a bonafide RnB banger, worth catching up with her over. Made with the support of NZ On Air Music.

How would you describe what aesthetic you’re going for with your music?

I love RnB vocals, soulful but with a little bit of a sexy vibe!

You’ve worked with some of our greatest names like Kings, Stan Walker, Vince Harder and, of course, spent a long time being the female front for Tomorrow People. What tip would you give to young artists who are keen to get collaborating with others?

Just to be yourself and always give 100% in your performances. I believe that’s where a lot of people get to see what you’re made of and I think for me that’s where doors have opened.

Which local have you not worked with, who you would love to work with?

You know what, surely get me on a track with Six60, haha.

How do you reach out to people you maybe haven’t met before?

Social media makes this a bit easier nowadays, but just keep in mind that if you don’t ask the answer will always be ‘no’. So just go for it.

What made you decide to change focus to being a solo artist?

It was always a dream of mine to be a solo artist. When I got pregnant with my son I had been with Tomorrow People for about five years, I just felt like moving into a solo career after having him was the right time.

What does your comfort zone for songwriting look like?

To be honest, I don’t actually love writing, so I like to set myself up with the right people in a space (usually the studio), where I can be comfortable enough to express what I’m thinking or feeling – then working with whoever it may be to turn those thoughts and feelings into a song.

What’s the story behind your latest single with Sammy Johnson?

Sammy and Matt Sadgrove were the masterminds behind this track. The song came about after some experiences Sammy had on a dating app. Sammy, Matt and myself spent some time together at No Filter Studios putting the vocals down. It was a chill, fun day but the boys were definitely pushing my voice to the limits and I’m glad they did, haha. The track speaks on not falling in love with someone that you’re just having a little fun with.

You’re great with social media. How do you keep it fun, rather than a chore?

Oh thanks, I didn’t really rate my social media skills that much, haha. I don’t overthink it too much, to be honest. I like to just post about normal day-to-day things, just what I’m up to really. I use it to help keep me on track as well. I do enjoy playing around with reels as well, so I guess that helps. But also, if social media is feeling like a chore and is a little overwhelming I just take a break, log off for as long as I need.

What’s coming up next for you in the next six months or so?

More music, baby!!!
