Blaek (pronounced bleak, black or blake?) is Rose Blake (Ida Lune, Pales), an electronic artist from Wellington, and this is her self-titled debut release. Co-produced with Alex Green, with guitar contributions from James Paul and violin from Hannah Fraser, this will go down a treat with fans of bands like Portishead and Massive Attack, though it has a more ethereal and magical touch.

Opener But You Won’t sets the vaguely trip-hop tone, ending with angelic vocals that leave an indelible imprint. I Know is haunting and moody, and has something of a Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) vibe.

Keep builds gently to a fantastic crescendo and is very ‘current’ sounding in the electronic pop context.

Stay The Night is a more mellow tune that has moody keys, echo-ey vocals and very restrained instrumentation, allowing all the vocals and the vibe of the song to truly shine. A great closer to a strong EP.

Apart from Blake’s obvious talents for writing and presenting her music, the violin is a stunning inclusion throughout. Whilst not as full sounding as the likes of London Grammar, this is well up there, especially for a debut release.
