Situated in the west coast hills of Karekare, just 45 minutes from Auckland’s CBD, Sundream Studios has recently opened its doors to musicians who appreciate a laid back recording vibe in stunning surrounds.
Sundream is owned and operated by Ant Tarrant, a musician in his own right who developed the new studio after having spent time overseas for most of his twenties, exploring the world, producing and playing music.
“After being mentored by Lindy Robbins [who wrote Skyscraper by Demi Lovato], Damon Sharpe [Love Don’t Cost A Thing by J-Lo], and Greg Ogan [producer for Justin Bieber and Jason Derulo] in the USA, I’m now applying my knowledge to create the best music I can,” he tells NZM. “I believe 100% in the fact that the song is the most important thing, however, a song needs to be produced and recorded in a way where true emotions shine through.”
In a world where over 60,000 songs are uploaded to Spotify every day, Tarrant says his focus is on quality over quantity.
“There needs to be something that really stands out to get anywhere. It’s a new studio with big ambitions. It’s so nice to have a break in nature when you are recording a song so this is what makes Sundream a unique and relaxing place to make music. I’m planning on setting up songwriting and artist retreats in the future too. This is the perfect getaway for it.”
Among some interesting gear he uses a new Slate Digital VMS1, and is currently awaiting the arrival of some big KRK monitors to replace his Presonus studio speakers. The studio features a full jam set up “…for when we need to get loud.”
A big believer in ambience and setting while making music, Ant took time to decorate the whole studio in neon lights and comfy couches, and apart from the studio and his services, he also offers the option to stay in the spare room to record over a few days and be fully immersed.
