Farewell To Lucha Lounge’s Karyn Cullington

News of the death of Auckland’s Lucha Lounge co-owner and active local music supporter Karyn Cullington has been followed by an outpouring of messages of grief from musicians and punters alike. Karyn was on holiday in Mexico, not many weeks after closing down the quirky Newmarket bar/venue.

Independent radio station 95bFM broke the news for many by posting the following statement on Saturday June 4 :

“For those of you who may not have heard, we are very saddened to say that Karyn Cullington, owner/operator of Lucha Lounge, has passed away.

Karyn’s dedication to music and commitment to sharing her passion was known by everybody that went to Lucha; or listened to her afternoon shows on 95bfm in the late 90s/early 00’s; or heard her excitement when she talked about the music she loved.

To the local music scene, Karynoke is legendary and iconic. She’s irreplaceable. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to all that knew and loved her.

More cowbell forever!”

According to friends she died of natural causes while on holiday in Mexico.

In honour of Karyn’s life there will be a celebration at Auckland’s St Kevin’s Arcade on Sunday June 12th at 5pm. Please bring a photo and memory to contribute.

“Join us afterwards downstairs at the Wine Cellar for a drink, and party on after at Whammy Bar from 7pm. There will be live music and Karynoke, of course.” – Miranda Palmer, Lucha Lounge

Based in Newmarket, Lucha Lounge was a small, Mexican luchador-themed bar with a strong music focus, that opened in 2009 and closed in mid May 2016.
