Will Saunders: Hopeful Objects EP

The striking artwork that accompanies this collection of music is like a twisted android with battle gear, in a pose reminiscent of a U.S. soldier during the Vietnam War. It is an arresting image done by Will Saunders himself, revealing that the Auckland musician is also a graphic artist whose work was often seen on covers of the now defunct Auckland gig guide The Fix.

This is his third solo album following ‘Curious Maladies’ and ‘Love Is For Others’.

Saunders’ snarling vocals lead us through fast-paced, intense songs filled with fuzz guitars on One Law and Knowing You, toning it down, but not by much, in Not Like This.

Then there are songs like Mass Extinction Event and Another Deity Away, both emotive, with the latter being the stand out of this collection.

The album was recorded on a PC in the bedroom, with all instruments credited to Saunders along with the production and mixing – the mastering handled by Dave Hine at The Dark. It evokes a certain haunting sentiment, you could file this under ‘alternative psychedelic’.
