Super Narco Man: Dank Mammoth Deluxe EP

Mount Maunganui’s seasoned punk trio Super Narco Man have polished their chops to produce this refreshingly progressive six-tracker of party-punk.

‘Dank Mammoth Deluxe’ is EP number three from Joel Burgin (guitar/vox), Matthew Gibson (bass) and drummer Rik Gainsford.

Released by UK-based independent NZ label Muzai Records this is a masterwork version of their 2016 EP ‘Dank Mammoth’ (which was recorded live on a cassette player).

This time recording at Tauranga’s Studio 11B has allowed Super Narco Man refine their freakishly raw sound into a hard-hitting digitised collection.

First up with Near Kill Experience, beefy drums, a startling bass line versus sharp guitar shrieks, eases the ear into the obscenely melodic shouts of “I don’t know why I choose to smoke / Making me choke / Possibly broke / Maybe I’ll die.” A perfect snapshot of the band in a stupefied nutshell with their appropriately putrid black and white video to match.

We All Suck But Love It, Total Disdain, Driving While Hungover Sux… you get the picture. Brain-numbing vocals, upbeat yet sludgy jazz riffs, thundering drums and punky groove breaks, and appealing lyrics (e.g “Hitting the people with a people stick…” on concluding track Audio Prostitute) complete the album and bring the soul comfort.

An ‘At The Drive-In’ feel with a crude Kiwi twang, this album is not for the softies. Bestowed with a fresh ‘Deluxe’ pair of undies, this hard and fast song list is a brilliant face-slapper that is bound to find a permanent spot in the collections of Kiwi punk lovers.
