Duration: Three years for Bachelor’s degree (full time).

Entry criteria: MusB, BA; University Entrance. Performance courses require successful audition.

Emphasis: UC School of Music offers a vibrant range of courses at graduate and postgraduate level. We specialise in the nexus between Performing and Composing / Creating new music.
UC Music students have the opportunity to bring together their own musical interests into flexible, self-directed pathways involving our 3 majors: Performance, New Music and Musical Culture. A wide range of courses are on offer, including performance, song writing, composition, digital music, recording and production techniques, music in our community, internships, music history and research, and musicianship. UC School of Music hosts regular visiting guests, performances, workshops, masterclasses, with up to three public events during each teaching week. Our site at the historic Arts Centre of Christchurch features a purpose-built recital room, teaching studios and practise rooms. At UC our approach is collaborative, innovative, and focuses on real world experience.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music (Hons), Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts, Doctor of Philosophy (Music), Graduate Diploma in Arts (Music).

Career prospects: Performing, Creating music (notated, songs, soundscapes, music for games), Musical education and teaching at schools and universities; positions in orchestras, choirs and other ensemble groups; freelance composing, arranging, and songwriting; positions of musical leadership in communities and orchestral groups; studio management and operation including sound engineering and music technologies; journalism, TV and radio (composition, planning, production), and publishing; event management; recreational health and therapeutic services; arts management and administration and more.

Facilities: Performance, rehearsal and practice rooms; computer/keyboard labs; recording facilities.

Tutors: 35 full and part-time performance, creative and academic staff including Prof. Mark Menzies (Head of Performance), Dr. Reuben de Lautour (Head of New Music), Dr Justin DeHart (senior lecturer in percussion) and Assoc. Prof. Glenda Keam (Head of School).
