Duration: Three years for Bachelor’s degree (full time).

Commences: 18 February 2019

Entry criteria: University Entrance. Also: successful audition for Performance Major or Non-major; submission of portfolio, Songwriting, Notated Composition.

Emphasis: UC School of Music offers a vibrant range of courses at graduate and postgraduate level. UC Music students have the opportunity to bring together their own musical interests into flexible, self-directed pathways involving our 3 majors: Performance, New Music (includes Composition) and Musical Culture. A wide range of courses are on offer, including performance, musical culture, composition, new music, songwriting, digital music, recording and production techniques, community music, music history and research, musicianship and music pedagogy.

UC School of Music hosts regular visiting guests, performances, workshops, masterclasses, with three public events happening during teaching weeks. Our site at the historic Arts Centre of Christchurch features a purpose built recital room, teaching studios and practise rooms. At UC our approach is collaborative, innovative, and focuses on real world experience.

Qualification: Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music (Hons), Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts, Doctor of Philosophy (Music), Graduate Diploma in Arts (Music).

Career prospects: Musical education and teaching at schools and universities; positions in orchestras, opera houses, choirs and other ensemble groups; free-lance composing arranging, and song writing; positions of musical leadership in communities and orchestral groups; studio management and operation including recording, sound engineering and music technologies; journalism, television and radio (composition, planning and production), and publishing; event management; recreational health services and therapeutic settings; arts management and administration and much more.

Facilities: Performance, rehearsal and practice rooms; computer/keyboard labs; recording facilities.

Tutors: 40 full and part-time performance, creative and academic staff including Prof. Mark Menzies (Head of Performance) and Dr. Reuben de Lautour (Head of New Music).
