Jayson Norris: Save My Soul EP

With its smooth vocals and reggae-lite beats, Jayson Norris’ five-track EP is one I feel I have heard before. It’s a well-produced body of work, mixed and engineered mostly by Tiki Taane at Tikidub Productions, with the more introspective Closer To You handled by Paul Matthews.

The tracks are catchy and trying at soulful. The title track is the strongest, a feel-good party anthem with groovy beats, a funky guitar solo and great variation throughout. Waterfall includes a killer outro in which with Norris’ harmonica adds a meaningful point of difference. While there are other such golden moments throughout the EP, unfortunately, they are surrounded by ambivalent, generic composition that compromises the integrity of these pieces. I really wanted to like this, but unfortunately finished the EP feeling underwhelmed.
