“E ora ai te reo whiua ki te ao! For the language to survive – share it with the world.” That’s the motto of the 2019 #1Miriona Waiata Challenge, encouraging you to sing (or even just lip-sync music) in te reo Māori and share it with the world.

You have three categories to choose from:

1.  Original Waiata – If you’re a composer and you’ve got a waiata then this category is for you. Record and upload to YouTube and Facebook using the #1miriona hashtag.
2.  Covers – Whether it’s your own version of a Reo Māori waiata or you’ve turned an English song into Reo Māori, this category is for you. Record and upload to YouTube and Facebook using the #1miriona hashtag.
3.  Lip Sync – Got the voice of a cat meowing in the rain? Then do the lip sync category challenge!  Show us your moves to some Reo Māori waiata and still be in to win.  Simply record using TikTok or Instagram, use the #1miriona tag and enter your details.

You can enter as many categories and as many times as you like. There’s no limit – except only one video per category. Full terms and conditions are available here.

The deadline is September 30, with a grand prize of $5000, plus $2000 for the original and cover categories, and $1000 for best lip-sync.
