A former semifinalist on The Voice Australia, Ella Monnery is no stranger to big outdoor stages, or big streaming numbers for that matter, her 2022 collab single with Auckland DnB duo Sly Chaos is closing in on half a million Spotify listens. Now focused on developing a solo career, and working closely with Kings, her song Me, Myself & I received New Music Single funding in July and was included on NZ On Air Music’s September NewTracks compilation.
My name is Ella Monnery. I grew up on the Kapiti Coast in a small town called Waikanae. Currently living in Auckland.
I’ve been working in the Aotearoa music scene for 7 years. I’ve performed both nationally and internationally. Fronting acts such as Synthony and SACHI. In 2024 I made my professional theatre debut as Scaramouche in the musical We Will Rock You. I have been in Coca Cola Christmas in the Park for eight years, made the semi finals on The Voice Australia in 2021, performed the national anthem many times. I have played the biggest festivals in the country – Rhythm and Vines, Homegrown, Electric Avenue. And now this year I am embarking on my solo artist career.
Starting to believe that I could do it! Definitely with the help and support from my partner Kings. He believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself. He is so talented and I am so lucky to have him producing my music.
Yes! I’ve never been known as anything different
For the longest time I didn’t know what I wanted my sound to be. I obviously love EDM and house music – so this naturally was a great place to start. I want to create music that makes people feel – but dance while they’re at it!
It’s hard to pinpoint one! But I’d probably say having my voice allowing me to performing all over the world – Greece, The Netherlands, Singapore, Mexico.
It’s definitely a different style of singing than what I normally do! I’m kind of known for big powerhouse vocals, where as this song is a bit more soft and smooth. In this single I’m singing in my head voice as opposed to big long belting notes.
It actually came from inspo from the singer Sade. She’s one of my dad’s favourite singers, and in turn one of mine! I wanted to create something sultry with stacked harmonies. Kings used her as a reference and we got to work!
I really love the chorus! The harmonies are stacked and the vibe and energy is infectious.
Kings and I worked on this together. And we also got a few of my favourite session musicians to play some live elements to bring the track to life.
I really want listeners to feel empowered to not let anyone or anything hold them back. I want people to feel something and dance while their at it!
I think so! But this year I’m wanting to perform on those big stages as ‘Ella Monnery’ instead of singing for other acts.
This song is huge! It was my first song in the DnB world. I think that style of music is huge in NZ, which is great. The beat is massive and then paired with power vocals it makes a great dancefloor track.
Myself and Kings! Working with your partner is so incredible – don’t get me wrong also challenging haha! But being able to do what you love with the person you love is unmatched. He is so talented and has a lot of experience in this industry, so I’m lucky to have him!
It’s super challenging doing what I do – and having anxiety. I’m unfortunately a big over thinker and worrier! Still to this day I stress out pre and post performances. I’d love to say I have it all figured out but unfortunately I do not lol! It’s all just about finding ways to navigate and get through this, I guess. Talking about it and normalising it has been so liberating. I try to be real and authentic with my struggles as I know I’m not the only one.
Elipsa – Hedonist
Sg. Nik ft Kings – Give Me That Feeling
P-Money – Hey Hey
Yes! Under Bodies ft Kings, Midnight Groove ft P-Money
This was my first time receiving NZOA funding. I can’t lie the budget was quite tricky for me – I’m a musician not a mathematician. 😂 It’s worked out well. This song has received the most streams in the time it’s been out – out of any of my releases. It did really well on TikTok and there’s a dance challenge people have been taking part in.
My advice with the funding would be – take your time! Don’t rush the application or into spending the money. Think about what you want to use your funding on in depth. Don’t be afraid to go against the norm and branch out from the standard and normal ideas. Stay up to date with current trends, social media etc! The world we live in is so fast paced and changing constantly!
No music video sorry, but there’s an Insta reel here.
