Bored Housewives Club is DIY to the core. Aaron Pyke (guitar, vocals) and Alayne Dick (drums, vocals) make up the indie-punk duo from Te Whanganui-A-Tara. And have cooked up a formula to make themselves stand out by using a combination of effect-drenched guitar hooks and hilariously vulgar song titles. Their debut EP ‘A MILF In Sheep’s Clothing’ personifies this formula. With an unmistakably imperfect DIY sound and straight-to-the-point lyrics.

DIY is not a term taken lightly when it comes to ‘A MILF in Sheeps Clothing’. Bored Housewives Club sound might not be for everyone, and the intro to the opening song Pink Depression is a guitar tone drowning in several guitar effects is a touching tribute to DIY punk music. The benefit of the doubt must be had for this opening song. As Bored Housewives Club’s signature blend of wacky tunes and hilariously to-the-point lyrics is evident here. An inspirational tune that consists of the duo literally screaming “get your shit together” at the listeners. Pink Depression encourages people feeling depressed to quite literally get their shit together. 

Fuck Up kicks in almost immediately following Pink Depression, the song is literally about being a fuck up, no sugar coating it. Just saying it how it is, which is an increasingly common theme in Bored Housewives Club music. A rhythmically focused track with a focus on the lyrics. The energy of this track would make a moshpit go crazy. 

Pity Party is the halfway mark of ‘A MILF in Sheeps Clothing’. Drummer Alayne Dick takes the lead vocals, singing about throwing a pity party with witty, relatable remarks for when someone throws themselves a pity party. Another rhythmically driven song that changes tempo and feel throughout. Without removing that signature Bored Housewives Club no-nonsense approach to writing music.

Bench Impress You is the love song of the album. The song tells the tale of a young gentleman quarrelling within his mind about how he is going to court a young maiden to whom he has taken a liking. About halfway through the song the duo switch up from their indie-punk genre and a completely unexpected White Stripes-Esque breakdown powers through the song, followed by some melodic jamming between the drummer and guitarist and a big final note to end the song. This is the most iconic song on the EP, transitioning seamlessly from an indie-punk ballad to a hard-hitting rock n roll. 

Similar to Bench Impress You. Fifth and final track Smoking Weed/Kissing Dudes is a ballad of sorts. Detailing the debaucherous events of an evening. The chorus provides some duel backing vocals from the duo. Providing a fitting ending that is the gleeful chaos of this EP. 

Bored Housewives Club has mastered the no-nonsense DIY approach. With the theme of their songs being to the point without missing a beat. Musically, it’s not the most polished piece. But that’s the beauty of DIY, hunkering down and working with the materials you have. With pure passion fuelling the process of making a song. While this might not be for everyone, ‘A MILF In Sheep’s Clothing is certainly a very fun, and entertaining listen.
