Fazerdaze: Fazerdaze EP

The self-titled EP from Fazerdaze is housed in the most endearing handcrafted brown packaging – and the music it contains is no less endearing, an altogether addictive blend of dreamy fuzz pop. Opening with the pulsing Reel, an acoustic driven nod along-er, the reverb-saturated vocal immediately evokes the haziness that the cover picture alludes to. A left-field dissonant chord bang in the middle of the second chorus is a wowser moment, indicative of the underlying songwriting flair that characterises this six-track collection from Auckland Uni music school student Amelia Murray.

There is a shoe-gaze sense to most tracks, particularly the wash of the Zero chorus. Her guitar textures morph from fuzzy to delay-heavy, warming whatever the case, with plenty of that natural bedroom-recording feeling coming through. Treading Lightly is vocal hook-ville and glorious when it climaxes in shouted outro. A reflective turn in closer Somethink rounds off the EP with interweaving vocal layers and then you go straight back to track one and start all over again. This is clever, bold and highly moreish.
