Course Title: PERFORMANCE IN MUSIC (Level 4)
Duration: One year full-time study.
Course start date: February 2022
No. of students per intake: 80 (including Drama and Dance students.)
Entry criteria: Minimum age, 16. Entry is by audition. Applicants must have some NCEA Level 1, show evidence of previous experience and display a degree of ability in one of the majors – vocals, guitar, keys, drums or bass.
Emphasis: The music programme is practical and performance focused. A range of both theory and practical courses are offered that will develop students’ performance and technical ability within their given major. Students will receive individual music lessons with their tutors, as well as combined classes with their major stream working with industry professionals.
The Music Performance papers put the student onto a full sized stage where they receive practical training in both solo and ensemble performances. The Music Fundamentals course will equip students to be able to read and write music and they will explore many contemporary music genres and settings in the Music Studies course. Students will also study Music Technology where they will develop composition and arranging skills and be able to collaborate with other music students for assessment and ensemble purposes. Learning how to operate and safely set up a PA system is covered in the Music Technology course and how to utilise and enhance musical compositions using Logic Pro and other software.
Qualification: NZ Certificate of Music Level 4, majoring in Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboards or Vocals.
Career prospects: Students will leave with an excellent knowledge and practical skills in their given major, and the confidence to apply them in a wide variety of industry settings including teaching, performance, sound engineering, event management, promotion, composition and arranging.

Emphasis: This level 5 programme builds on what was covered in level 4 as students develop performance material through interlinked learning modules – involving the whole process from planning and pre-production right through to going out on the road for short tours. Students gain invaluable performance experience as well the ability to hone and craft their own original material.
Qualification: NZ Diploma in Music, Level 5.
Career prospects: Students will leave with an excellent knowledge and practical skills in their given major, and the confidence to apply them in a wide variety of industry settings including teaching, performance, sound engineering, event management, promotion, composition and arranging.
