Skymning: Nestled Between Vast Depressions EP

Admittedly now London-based, Skymning must still rate as one of our capital city’s best-kept secrets. A fascinating solo artist, from his more ambient experimental beginnings in 2012 with a bedroom-recorded debut album called ‘1993’, through regular releases that include cassette albums and last year’s Art School/Long Distance single release. Safe to say that his music serves as a personal catharsis, he happily acknowledges on his Bandcamp page that he was emotionally messed up for most of the last year. Hence the title, clearly. Downtempo, largely ambient electronica with samples, beats, piano etc. this five-track digital EP is a soundtrack to a dark period in the artist’s life, but it wholly exists outside of that. From the intro of Hell Is Other People (sampling a self-made preacher with a megaphone outside a Melbourne church), to last track Alone With My Thoughts, featuring raw piano and the only track Skymning has put his voice to (from a place of extreme vulnerability), it’s a quietly intriguing and immersive listen. I really love the melancholy piano, sirens and heavy rain of Collapse. If you like your electronic music with barely buried emotion and great beats and blips, Skymning’s your man.
