This year’s Music Month Summit is fast approaching, and with a lot of other events going on around town, we thought it would be a great idea to ask organiser Teresa Patterson (pictured above with Andrew Papas) a few questions about the summit, why you should go, and the NZ Music Managers Forum.

Can you remember when the first Music Month Summit was held and whose idea it was?

It was about 10 years ago and the Summit evolved from the NZ Music Month seminars that the NZ Music Commission and the NZ MMF held.

How would you describe the Music Month Summit to someone who has never heard of it before?

One day, one stop shop to learn about the NZ Music Industry. Each year the theme is different, and this year the format is also different. 15 Music Industry Professionals (including artists) are talking about their passion when it comes to Music or the Music Industry.

Who should attend the summit?

Anyone with an interest in Music and the Music Industry.

With people like musician Moana Maniapoto, Saiko Management’s Scott Maclachlan, David Ridler of NZOA and many more, there’s a high caliber of active members of the NZ Music Industry on your panels. Which speaker are you personally looking forward to and why?

It’s actually hard to pick one, as each speaker is addressing a different topic. I am genuinely looking forward to all of them.

Say I’m interested, but I don’t have all day – can I attend only one or two blocks, and which ones would you suggest to me?

You will just need to take a punt but it would be best to come to the whole day

The 2017 theme is ‘For the Love of Music’ which sounds like it could be the tagline on many a Kiwi music manager’s business card. The Music Month Summit has been organised by the Music Managers Forum, an organisation you’ve been involved with from the beginning. What do you guys do apart from organising the Music Month Summit?

Music Managers Forum NZ is the collective voice for music managers and self-managed artists. The MMF NZ is a non-profit trade association dedicated to helping grow artist manager businesses through education, networking, and advocacy.

We hold a range of seminars on all areas of Music Management and the Music Industry. Last year we held 33 seminars. We also have one on one confidential mentoring with a Music industry professional where you can also be project mentored through something like your single/ep/album release, booking your first tour etc. Also, we put on the annual Music Managers Awards.

Themed around a passion for music, 15 guests from all corners of the music industry will be sharing their stories about how music has inspired or changed their lives. According to the organisers, this is not about covering off a list of topics, but the rare opportunity to listen to people who are truly passionate about an aspect of music or their involvement in the Music Industry.  Presented in blocks of four speakers, there will be a Q & A session after each block.
